Bitcoin declines during ‘crypto winter’—what investors need to understand

Cryptocurrency markets have experienced significant volatility in recent weeks, with prices dropping sharply and raising concerns among investors. Bitcoin declines during ‘crypto winter’—what investors need to understand has become a key discussion point as the world’s largest digital currency struggles to maintain momentum.

Bitcoin recently slipped below the $66,000 mark, hitting its lowest level in over a year. Market analysts had previously identified $70,000 as an important psychological support level, and falling below it triggered additional selling pressure.

The leading cryptocurrency has also dropped nearly half from its peak of approximately $126,000 reached in October. During Thursday’s trading session, bitcoin fell by more than 10%, highlighting the increased volatility that continues to shake investor confidence.

Analysts Warn of Deeper Declines

Some market strategists believe the downward trend could continue. Barry Bannister, chief equity strategist at Stifel, suggested that bitcoin could eventually decline to around $38,000. His projection is based on patterns observed during previous major downturns, often referred to as bitcoin “super-bear” cycles.

Similarly, Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management, emphasized that the current downturn is more than a temporary price correction. He compared the present market environment to the intense crypto slump seen in 2022, attributing the decline to excessive borrowing and profit-taking by early cryptocurrency adopters.

Market Drop Despite Political and Institutional Support

Interestingly, the cryptocurrency sell-off is occurring despite strong backing from U.S. leadership and growing institutional involvement. President Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed support for digital assets, promising to position the United States as both a “bitcoin superpower” and the global hub for cryptocurrency innovation.

In addition, the launch of bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) on U.S. stock exchanges roughly two years ago made it easier for traditional investors to gain exposure to crypto markets. However, positive developments such as institutional adoption and favorable policies have not been enough to stop the recent market downturn.

Why Crypto Prices Are Falling

Experts suggest that during intense market slumps, even positive news often fails to influence investor sentiment. Historically, crypto winters tend to persist until investors lose enthusiasm and trading activity slows considerably.

According to Hougan, the current crypto winter likely began in early 2025. While institutional demand initially masked market weakness, retail investors experienced sharp losses during this period.

Other contributing factors include financial strain in the technology sector, which has weighed on bitcoin’s performance. Analysts often classify bitcoin as a high-risk, technology-like investment, meaning it frequently reacts to broader trends in growth stocks.

Additionally, the Federal Reserve’s cautious approach to interest rate reductions has also pressured crypto prices. Bitcoin and other speculative assets generally perform better when borrowing costs are lower and monetary policies are more supportive of economic expansion.

How Long Could the Crypto Winter Last?

Historical trends suggest that crypto winters typically last around 13 months. Some analysts believe the current downturn could end soon if certain developments occur, such as strong global economic growth, supportive cryptocurrency legislation like the proposed Clarity Act, or increased adoption of bitcoin by national governments.

The Clarity Act aims to establish regulatory guidelines for digital asset companies, potentially encouraging broader adoption of blockchain technology across financial markets.

Investment Advice: Limit Crypto Exposure

Financial professionals consistently remind investors that cryptocurrencies are highly volatile assets. While the potential for large gains exists, the risk of substantial losses is equally significant.

Certified financial planner Carolyn McClanahan recommends that investors avoid allocating more than 5% of their investment portfolio to any single high-risk asset, including cryptocurrencies. Maintaining a diversified investment strategy can help reduce overall financial risk.

Investment advisors also emphasize the importance of having a clear plan for entering and exiting crypto positions. Strategic buying and selling decisions can help investors manage losses and protect profits during periods of volatility.

Is the Crypto Decline a Buying Opportunity?

Some experts believe that price drops can present long-term investment opportunities, particularly for investors who remain confident in bitcoin’s future. Financial planner Barry Glassman noted that bitcoin has experienced significant declines in the past, only to recover and reach new highs later.

However, investors who purchased bitcoin at higher prices should reassess their investment strategy. Experts suggest asking whether you would still buy bitcoin at current prices. If the answer is no, it may be worth reconsidering your holdings.

Tax Implications of Selling Crypto

Selling bitcoin at a loss can provide certain tax advantages. Investors may use these losses to offset gains from other investments, a strategy known as tax-loss harvesting. If total losses exceed gains, individuals may use up to $3,000 annually to offset other taxable income, with remaining losses carried forward into future tax years.

However, tax rules can differ depending on how bitcoin is owned. Direct ownership of bitcoin typically allows investors to sell and quickly repurchase the asset while still claiming the loss. In contrast, bitcoin held through ETFs is subject to the wash-sale rule, which requires investors to wait at least 30 days before buying back the same investment.

Final Thoughts

The current market slump highlights the unpredictable nature of cryptocurrencies. While Bitcoin declines during ‘crypto winter’—what investors need to understand remains a critical concern, experts stress the importance of long-term strategy, diversification, and informed decision-making. As the crypto market continues to evolve, investors should carefully evaluate risks and maintain disciplined investment approaches to navigate uncertain market conditions.
