One of the Ohio Valley’s fastest-growing basketball traditions returns this August as the Fourth Annual James D. Watts Sr. Classic brings together youth athletes, adult competitors, families and community supporters for nearly a week of basketball, mentorship and community pride.
Built around the theme “Ballin’ for a Legacy”, the annual event continues the vision of the late James D. Watts Sr., affectionately known throughout the region as “Uncle D,” whose commitment to developing young people through sports and mentorship continues to inspire generations.
The week begins with the James D. Watts Sr. Kids Camp, running August 4–6, where young athletes will receive basketball instruction, encouragement and life lessons centered on leadership, teamwork, discipline and character development. Throughout the three-day camp, participants will also hear from special guest speakers each day, reinforcing the event’s commitment to developing champions both on and off the court.
Following the youth camp, the spotlight shifts to competitive action as the James D. Watts Sr. Adult Tournament takes place August 7–9. Teams from across the region will compete in a double-elimination tournament, culminating in a one-game championship final with a cash prize awarded to the tournament winner.
Organizers say the event has grown into much more than a basketball tournament.
“Every year we continue building something bigger than basketball,” organizers said. “This event is about honoring Uncle D’s legacy by investing in people, strengthening our community and creating opportunities for the next generation.”
The James D. Watts Sr. Classic has become an annual gathering that unites athletes of all ages while celebrating sportsmanship, mentorship and community engagement throughout the Ohio Valley.
Plans are also underway for the James D. Watts Sr. Women’s Tip-Off Classic, with additional details and scheduling expected to be announced at a later date.
